The VANOS unit is located between the camshaft and the chain drive gear. If the relative angular position of the camshaft with the crankshaft does not change on a conventional valve actuator, regardless of the load on the engine, then the phase change system allows you to adjust the position of the camshaft depending on the speed and load on the engine.
