What is Flood Lights?

How to choose the right LED Flood Lights?

Wattage

Wattage is an amount of electrical power. Less Wattage = more energy saving. Below is comparison wattages and light output of Incandescent, CFL and LED bulbs:

Lumens

Lumen = Light Output / Brightness, is the standard unit for measuring the amount of light hitting per square meter of surface 30cm away from the light. The higher the lumens, the brighter the light.

Beam angle

The beam angle of an LED bulb or lamp is defined as the angle at which light is emitted from a given light source. Beam angles are commonly 15, 30, 45 and 60 degrees. Example: 60Deg Globe at 1m away is 700 lux

Colour Temperature: warm white or cool white

The colour temperature of a product is a linear scale of measuring the colour of light, available in 2 types:

1. Cool white - is ideal for kitchens, laundries and warmer climate areas as cool light will help to make the rooms feel cooler.
2. Warm white - helps to create a more intimate atmosphere, more relaxing and comfortable environment suited to bedrooms and living rooms.

Things to Consider Before Buying Flood Lights

Buyers should consider placement location, type of finish, and whether to purchase lights with motion sensor or dusk to dawn features.

Location

There are three main considerations when determining the location of flood lights on the property.

1. Should mount the light pointing downward at around 22 degrees angel to bright on the intended target without blinding anyone outside.
2. Should mount the light in a location where it will not be pointed at a neighbouring home. This can be a nuisance or invasion of their privacy.
3. Should position at least 2.7m from the ground to prevent any touching or tampering.

• The best option is to pick a finish that matches the color or the style of the areas.

Motion Sensors

• Motion sensor flood lights are both practical and affordable.
• These lights operate in conjunction with infrared sensors that pick up on heat waves when someone or something within range is in motion.
• Depending on the sensor, the light remains active anywhere from 1 to 10 minutes and then automatically shut off again. This provides a great safety feature and also prevents any wasted energy.

Dusk to Dawn Lights

• These lights automatically turn on and shut off on a certain time of the day.
• Features: conserves energy and also adds another layer of protection to the home
• Cautious: consult with neighbours to ensure that an all-night light does not disturb them in any way.
